Of all the riches in the world
The most precious gift she was given
Was not a gift that could be bought
It was the gift of heaven
It did not come wrapped in a bow
It did not come from others
It was the gift of usefulness
The greatest of the treasures
Doing duty all her life
And working for a reason
She had forgotten all along
Her unique self was pleasing
She had to unwrap every layer
It took more than one mere season
The hidden jewels of hers alone
Discovering her meaning
Under all the pain and fear
And throughout all her life
She realized that she had been
Learning through her strife
And what she found under her skin
Inside her heart so strong
Had been beating all that time
Her useful purpose had been growing
When she unraveled all the pieces
And put them back together
Her usefulness was clear to see
She had plans to use forever
In every loaf that she had baked
In every meal she delivered
In every menial task she’d done
Her usefulness was mirrored
And now her path is clear to see
The secrets to life’s pleasures
She tends each step along the way
As each moment is to treasure
She sees from where she is best placed
And serves as best she can
For the rhythm of give and receive
Is her own song, her best plan
She pours love into vessels empty
She delivers what she must
For her gift is one that should be shared
For others to start trust
She serves with what she has at hand
As every useful job fills up
Those who gain and those who give
Overflow the useful cup
